Hondoq’s Sunday Drumming Afternoon started as an experiment and it turned out to be a success! Obviously there was this number of people who missed the good vibes just because they still believed that Gozo Drum Tribe’s program was going to be effected by a single dark cloud in the afternoon sky! I am sure they regret it a lot!

Victoria, also known as Rabat or by its title Città Victoria is the capital of Gozo, an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The town has a total population of 6,911 (March 2013), and by population is the largest locality in Gozo.

The area around the town, situated on a hill near the centre of the island, has been settled since Neolithic times. Victoria is the name given 10 June 1887 by the British government on the occasion of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee, at the request of the Bishop of Malta, Mons. Sir Pietro Pace. However many Gozitans still often refer to it by the name Rabat. It is usually known as Ir-Rabat Għawdex to distinguish it from the town of Rabat on the island of Malta.

Iż-Żebbuġ is a small village on the island of Gozo in Malta located in the northwest of the island, close to the towns of Gharb and Marsalforn, on a hilltop overlooking the coast. As of November 2005, it had a population of 1770. The word Żebbuġ means “olives”, a crop for which the village used to be noted, although nowadays very few olive trees remain on the slopes of Żebbuġ. The village is also well known for its fine lacework and for its nearby coastal beauty spots.

Humans have inhabited Żebbuġ and areas nearby for millennia. There are Bronze Age sites on nearby Kuljat hill, and even older remains can be found to the north, close to the bay of Qbajja

We will take a brief tour of the village and visit the parish church dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.

Malta, Gozo, Marsalforn, Summer 2003, Music: Xemx, Domenic Grech and The Tramps

We’ll take a tour around the quaint village of Qala, Gozo, showing some of the old houses of character and will visit one of the most beautiful beaches we have, Hondoq Ir-Rummien while enjoying a Waltz by Josef Strauss and a Polka by Johann Strauss II.

1. Sphärenklänge, Op. 235 (Music of the Spheres), by Josef Strauss (1827-70)
Josef Strauss (German: Josef Strauß) (1827 – 870) was an Austrian composer and a great one also.

2. French Diplomat Polka (Diplomaten Polka Francaise) Opus 448 by Johann Strauss II.

Qala is a quaint village in Gozo, Malta, with a population of about 1700 people. Nearby is Ħondoq ir-Rummien, a coastline with salt pans and caves popular with snorkellers.

Qala was first referred to in a fifteenth century portolan preserved at the Vatican library and has taken its name from the qala or port of Ħondoq ir-Rummien.

Breathtaking scenes can be enjoyed, among other places, from the Qala Belvedere and from the small courtyard in front of the church known as Il-Madonna tal-Blat (Saint Mary of the Rocks). This church faces Comino and legend has it that it was built so that the people of that island could follow Holy Mass from across the straits when rough weather precluded a priest from crossing there.

Qala became a parish in 1872 and was dedicated to Saint Joseph. The parish was built by Dun Guzepp Diacono. Its style is baroque as in many other churches on the island. The village feast to St. Joseph is celebrated yearly in early August.

A chapel dedicated to the Immaculate Conception is situated on your way to Hondoq ir-Rummien, and it is one of the earliest Marian shrines on the island and dates back to 1575. A cemetery has been built adjacent to this chapel. In the early 1650s, the chapel was enlarged and in 1688, it became the parish church of the eastern part of Gozo, Qala, Nadur and Għajnsielem and remained so for about 12 years. It served again as a parish church of Qala.

Famous people from Qala include Anton Buttigieg, a poet, politician who served as the President of Malta from 1976 to 1981 and the famous Ophthalmologist, Dr Franco Mercieca who is currently preparing to run in the next General election in Malta and Gozo with the Labour Party. Franco is an avid football enthusiast and he is very involved in the community activities in his native village, Qala.

Ħondoq ir-Rummien

The bay can be acceded to from the village of Qala and lies opposite to the isle of Comino. The small sandy beach and its crystalline water makes Ħondoq Bay very popular amongst the local population especially in summer.

Apart from an ideal swimming zone, the bay is also renowned for diving, especially for beginners. During summer evenings a number of local families stay late in Ħondoq to relax by their smoking barbecues enjoying the cool summer breeze.

In Qala we find various organizations: The Qala Local Council, the Ite ad Joseph Band Club established in 1996, the Qala Fireworks Group, formed back in 1956, the Ghaqda Briju San Guzepp established in 2007, the Radio Station Lehen il-Qala, set up in 1996, the Qala St. Joseph Football Club founded in 1968, and the Menhir Qala Folk Group set up in 2004 to promote local traditions and culture of the Gozitan and Maltese folklore.

They also hold the Gozo International Celebration which is held 3 times a year, and the International four day Folk Festival.

We will take a brief tour of the village of Xewkija, Gozo while enjoying the 2nd half of the famous Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss played by the New Art Symphonic Orchestra under the direction of Mro Andrea Ferrari.

We’ll also see photos of the majestic Rotunda

Most photos by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech or as noted

Xewkija, which is situated between Għajnsielem and the capital town, Victoria, is the oldest village in Gozo. It became the first parish outside Victoria in 1678. Dun Grezz Farrugia from Valletta, became its first parish priest.

It became the first district ‘contrada’ to be known as ‘casale’ or village.

The name is derived from the Maltese word “Xewk”, meaning “thistles” or “thorns”. Xewkija is famous for its church, The Rotunda, which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. It is the Seat of the Knights of the Order of St. John, and was built from Maltese stone by local masons and craftsmen. It is the largest in Gozo and its dome dominates the village. Its architect was Joseph D’Amato. It replaced an older church.

The Banda Prekursur (Precursor Band) is the oldest organization in Xewkija. It was set up on 13 May 1929. Lorenzo Zammit Haber, Marcell Mercieca, Giuseppe Buttigieg, Giovanni Haber and Tomaso Attard were among its founders. Mr. Lorenzo Zammit Haber was first President and Secretary.

The coat of arms of Xewkija is a shield on a gold background with a red horizontal strip between two thorns, one above and one below.

Being Muzyka (Music) by name I could not miss … gig by Ira Losco in Gozo at Hondoq by Night. She is the most popular and the most successful Maltese musician. Was Malta represantative in the Eurovision Song Contest 2002 with the song “7th Wonder” scoring second. She’s pretty, approachable and sings pleasant to the ear simple songs. Just right for a night party in Hondoq beach, on certain memorable night in Gozo/Għawdex (from Castilian it means joyful). By the way … Happy birthday Miss Losco – 31.07 ! Don’t stop the music – c’mon, join the PARTY !!!!

Mountain biking from the Marsalforn Valley to the Mielah Valley (Wied il-Mielah) in search of the ‘other’ Azure Window on Gozo. Everyone knows about the famous Azure Window in Dewejra, but not many Gozitans are familiar with the arch at the Mielah Valley. Very spectacular. We trek across various terrain from asphalt, to concrete, to gravel to tracks, to rural footpaths.
